Last night I had a Free Target.
I was in a foul mood, and it had been four hours since I had my afternoon snack. (hmmm.. I see a correlation here!)
I decided that I was going to take a Freetarget.
I wanted something to eat FAST. My instinct was to run up to Luciano's where they sell Pizza by the Slice and have a glass of wine, and scarf down some Pizza.
However in the back of my mind I could see the words of Amandas Blog about how Alcohol is metabolized differently in our body.
I am in full force Challenge mode, so I don't want to jeopardize my win for a glass of Chianti, if you know what I'm sayin'!
I also want to be on the same page as Coach Danielle who is abstaining from all things with a "proof". Soooo. I went a different direction.
I got out the Oatmeal!
Okay.. Let me just take a minute to sing the praises of OATS!
What other food can be so "comforting" and versatile.. as the tiny oat?
The texture, the bubbling in the pot, the scent of the additions of cinnamon, and other (Free Target) accoutrements is absolutely SUBLIME.

I literally sat and pondered how three ingredients:
WATER
SALT and
OATS..
could heed such deliciousness?

My personal Free Target was more the matter of " Have some oatmeal with that Brown Sugar!"
But there are countless ways to enjoy this Whole Grain and stay K-Balanced.
Here are a couple of my favorite, what's yours?
Cinnamon Oatcakes are always numero uno!
Claires Pumpkin Oatmeal is a soon to be favorite! (I am making a big pot of it in the crock pot to share next week!)
and I LOVE the Oatmeal Pancakes with Blackberry Sauce. They take a little more time but they are worth it if you are a pancake lover like me!
Looking forward hearing more about your relationship with my old friend, OATS :)

Yummmm, oatmeal. I cook it and eat it almost daily with vanilla protein powder, a few pecans, cinnamon and a little low fat milk to thin it out for a K4. If I have them a few fresh jewel like blueberries sprinkled on the top.

I have that very same set of spoons at home!

Nothing like a half dozen eggs to start your day.....side affects may include spontaneous feather growth and a urge to wake up and crow at the rising sun.... ;-)

Yes, Lisa great question.
The main difference between instant oatemal and old fashioned rolled oats is in the processing. Both types of oatmeal are rolled and steamed to be flattened to keep their shelf life. Instant oatmeal is actually cooked and dried first and processed again to make it easy to cook instantly. You are basicllay just rehydrating a food that has already been cooked and dehydrated once. Think dried powdered foods you have taken camping.
Although this is a pretty benign process, your body will process these two types of foods completely different.
The more processed a carbohydrate is, the quicker your blood sugar will rise and the faster those carbs will be stored away as glycogen or fat. Because old fashioned, steel cut, or groat type oatmeal are whole grains, all of their fiber is left in tact, all their B- vitmanis are left in place and so the high fiber content of these foods is MUCH softer on your blood sugar. Plus you get the much needed micronutrients that your body needs to make the carbs, protein and fats actually usable in your body.
The best choice, the biggest bang for your nutritional buck is always the whole grain not the instant version.
Go whole grains!!!!!

I LOVE Steel Cut! I know someone who makes a big bunch of it and then lets it cool, rolls it into a log like shape an slices off invidual servings for the week, (think Polenta). I though that was a great idea! Between the Rice cooker idea and the saving portions for the week.. their os no reason not to have a hearty bowl of oats for a carb ! And I think instant oats pale in comparasion.. its SO worth the extra time invested whenever possible! Amanda , I wonder if you could tell us a little more about the packets of flavored patmeal, and why they are not ideal? What is it about them that isn't the same as regular rolled oats?

In addition to the links above (Cinnamon Oatcakes being my all time favorite) don't forget about the Instant Oatmeal and Eggs , and Kinetix Oatmeal.

The steel cut kind is my favorite. Has a bit of a chewiness. If you think you dont have time for steel cut oats? Think - rice cooker. Only takes about 25 minutes. 1 cup of oats and 3 cups of water. I make mine after dinner and portion out the oats for the next few days and put them in the fridge. Buy steel cut oats it in bulk or the Bob's brand, the 'Irish' brand in the tin is 3 times the cost.
