Okay, how is it possible that nearly every infomercial, fitness magazine, “expert” columnist and latest book each claim to have the answer to losing body fat and sculpting the elusive lean and healthy physique?
Could it be that they’re all right?
The answer to that question is a loud and clear, “no”. Truth be told, I believe there are HUNDREDS OF BIG FAT LIES out there related to fitness and nutrition, and I’m sure that over time, I’ll be discussing most of them with you. There really is a massive heap of junk gadgets, miracle pills and outrageous promises in the market.
I believe the more half-baked theories and garbage information that is put out there, the more people become confused. And, the more contradictory the theories, the more paralyzed people are to do anything.
Many of the lies have been out there for so long they’ve just been accepted as truth. And, if you accept them as truth, I have a feeling they will sabotage your efforts to get and stay in the best shape of your life. So, let’s start exposing these lies so we can move forward, stay focused, and continue on our journey together.
LIE #1: The Magic Fat Burning Supplement!
There are no family-friendly words to describe how I feel about this lie. The “magic fat burning supplement” is one of the worst scams of all time. From 1993 - 2004, ephedra and ephedrine-based products rung up over $15-billion in sales. These addictive metabolic stimulants caused a short-term boost in metabolism and a long-term disruption of the body’s natural balance.
The simple rule of homeostasis is that your body will always strive to find balance. Artificially over stimulating your metabolism for long-periods of time will only cause a natural slowing of your actual metabolic rate when you’re “off” the stimulant. So, when you stop using the stimulant, you gain back all the fat you dropped and more.
Thankfully, the FDA banned ephedra in 2004 after nearly one-hundred deaths attributed to that ingredient. For a short-time, I had hope that maybe this “lie” would go away.
Boy was I wrong!
Today there are as many “ephedrine free” fat-burners out there as ever making bogus claims. In my opinion, these products are completely worthless from a scientific standpoint. Their claims are never backed by science and in fact, in 2007 the FTC handed out $25-million in false advertising fines to several diet pill companies. What a joke! Magic pills are full of nothing but empty promises. I will GUARANTEE you can achieve a lean, healthy body without any magic pills whatsoever. You can do it naturally. And, it’s really not that hard.
Getting in the best shape of your life will always come down to eating a healthy balanced diet, exercising regularly and surrounding yourself with a supportive community. Please take a pass on this lie and learn how to get in shape the kinetix way - the natural way.
LIE #2: The Quick Fix!
Let me just say this as it relates to transforming your physique; if it sounds too good to be true, IT IS!
I’m so sorry to have to tell you this but, you will not drop 30 pounds of fat in 30 days on any program. You will not have sculpted abs in a week by using some plastic ab-crunch gizmo. And, you cannot sit back, hook yourself up to some electro-stimulating patches and wake up with a firm, toned body.
The quick fix is most certainly a lie. I’ve met people who have chased the quick fix for years (sometimes decades). These poor souls give everything about a week to “work” and then quickly move on to the next big promise. I should admit that I was one of these poor souls for many years. I tried every “diet” out there. I was always the guy starting something on Monday - and declaring it sucked by Wednesday. Thank goodness those days are over.
We’ve been saying for years that fat-loss isn’t rocket science. We’ve been up front and honest with our clients that if you expect to drop more than two pounds a week, you’ll probably be disappointed. But, if you’re patient and you build the principles of kinetix into your life, you’ll drop body fat each week, you’ll gain strength and energy and you’ll not only get in great shape, you’ll stay in great shape.
Please avoid the quick fix. You deserve better.
LIE #3: Your genetics are to blame.
This lie drives me nuts. I’ve read more and more articles over the past year suggesting that if you’re overweight, there’s nothing you can do about it. It’s all in your genes they’re saying. What a load of malarkey.
Over the past decade, I’ve experienced a significant rise in the “it’s not my fault” excuse when meeting new clients who are desperately in need of losing weight. There is a definite correlation between taking responsibility for where you’re at and making real progress towards new goals. Quickly squashing lie #3 is essential to getting someone in the right frame of mind to make real changes.
Now, I’m not saying there is absolutely no genetic component to being overweight. There is. But I will say with absolute certainty that EVERYONE regardless of genetics will benefit from eating healthy and exercising. The most widely accepted truth in the scientific community is that as much as 75% of the results you can experience on a fitness program have nothing to do with your genetics.
The condition you’re in today is largely the result of your own lifestyle choices. That’s great! That means that you are in control of your level of health and fitness. All we need to do is exchange some of your current unhealthy behaviors for healthy ones and you’ll experience real results.
The message in this lie is that you have control. You can make a change! You have the power to get in great shape! Please do not chalk your current condition up to genetics. Please do not settle for an easy out. After coaching thousands of people from all walks of life to their best bodies ever, I can tell you that you can do it too!
Never give up!
Well, there you have them, 3 BIG FAT LIES. There’s no doubt this is just the beginning of the list. I hope this helps bring some clarity to your journey. Stay focused and keep pushing. You really are the reason that all of us at kinetix do what we do!
Your friend,
Jamie
