Oh Leg Day ! Nothing quite like it , is there?
That day that separates the beginning of the week from the end is frought with a memorable workout to the Quads, Hamstrings and Calves.
Just wondering , amongst all the new members , and to those who are no stranger to Squats , Lunges and Calf Raises, what is your leg day experience ?
Any thoughts, tips or stories to share?
For me, Wednesdays are a challenge. I remember when I began with Coach David back in the day ...that he remarked how quiet I was on Wednesdays compared to any other day of the week. (being quiet is not usually my thing) .
I continue to really have to focus on Wednesdays to make sure I am pushing myself and getting the maximum benefit out of my workout . This is almost 2 years into my Kinetix Experience. I love having a workout partner on Wednesdays and if I don't,I focus on what the exercise is doing to make my legs stronger and how important that strong legs are for the all of other things I want to do.
Hiking , Running , etc.
Happy Leg Day !

This is a timely subject I am thinking!
Who's got a story?
This might be comforting to know that your K-ancestors have all been through it !...
( tell you quads that , RIGHT?)

Old, but new.

Every once in a while I like to glance around at what people have writen in the past, then say a little somethin. It helps to renew subjects, and bumps it up for those who haven't gone through the past year or so of discussions.

I'm sure you may not have known but I had an AWESOME (but very evil) trainer last year. I really wish I still had 'em, but I changed to a new gym closer to home. (I really like my 5-10 mile block now! New Horse equestrian center, new gym, very nice!) Well as awesome as my trainer was, man oh man, the term slave driver came to mind. :)

While I showed him the Kinetix exercises, he basically laughed and with an evil grin said I've got something better! That is where my love for machine came in. And yes, the first Wednesday of starting Kinetix does kill you, and you might not walk lady-like, everyone actually gets jealous! (Odd concept, eh... You're in pain, and they wish they could be)

I'm not going to lie, my former gym rocked! I had a completely brand new gym; new machines, new pool, new everything!

I have learned to love these machines:
leg press
calf raise
leg curl
leg extension
and the hip abduction/adduction.

I hated machines before I started Kinetix (with Kinetix, I got a trainer, he showed me machines, and all was well). At the start I just wanted to do cardio. Run, dance, ride, swim, I loved cardio. Now the machines are where I want to spend my time. So if you have the chance to use them, I strongly suggest using them!

Now I have a newER gym, and I have out-grown my trainer.

:)

Classic...Thanks for bumping this discussion back into the foreground! You are right, there are some awesome blogs and discussions that get buried and forgotten.

I love that you took advantage of the services at your old gym to get help with proper strength training form when you got started with Kinetix. However, now I am going to push you got go back to free weights. Studies have also shown that exercising with free weights incorporates greater muscle fiber activity than exercising with machines. The machines do a good job of isolating a specific muscle group, but actually, our goal is to have you strengthening your stabilizing core muscles too. Using free weights will accomplish this! Reach for the dumbbells next week...let me know how you do.

PS....I guess a "quick" walk around your block now isn't possible...oh, you must love having all that land to roam!!

Oh I do... we have four acres (for now; really want more!) but I still feel too close to our neighbors! As for quick walks, fortunately all blocks in AZ are a square mile, so when I'm riding or going for a walk, it makes it easy to keep track of how far I've gone. Also, to train my horses I've found its great to walk or jog (trot for her) with her to the equestrian center. I could ride since the training is for her to get use to traffic noises, but its good exercise for me to jog next to her, plus build up our trust.

As for free weights, I love them for my arms and back, just not thrilled with them when working my legs. Lunges, are ok... I love the machine for calves because I can add extra weight. I feel squats are actually safer to do on the leg press. But I'll do a couple for you. :)

I just started this week and am glad that nearly falling down stairs is normal after the leg work! Since I'm very much a beginner, I did them without weights so I can get the form down first (at home with my laptop in front of me!). The lunges were the most challenging for me since my knees are in sad shape. Actually, most of me is in sad shape, but that's why I'm here :) I'm looking forward to tracking my progress over the next few months.

Prajna...Smart move!! Proper form is key!! Once you have that down you will be able to push even harder. Trust me...the first leg day is memorable for all of us!!

ok so my leg day experience involves two days. The first day I did not understand how lunges work out my hamstrings, but I did them anyway. the next three or four days my quads were burning like they certainly should not due to the lunges. Now, after studying the video multiple times and working on my form, I still do not understand how they are a hamstring workout, and my quads are burning again.

Can I get some help with this anyone?

Also Lisa, you are my coach and I was wondering if you have been getting my emails. Particularly about my starter pack that I feel I should have recieved weeks ago.

Joey...I'm not surprised that you are feeling your quads after doing lunges...they are a mulitpurpose exercise! Quads, Hamstrings, AND Glutes. The full meal deal! And if you've done your squats first as we suggest, they are already fatigued, so you will notice them more during the lunges. Make sure that most of your weight is in your front heel....and don't let that front knee extend past your toes. Form is key.

Did you ask your partners at work if they have seen your starter kit? It is a flat white box, about ten inches square by 2.5 inches tall? So often we find they have been signed for and misplaced in the back room of a store. Double check...and if you still don't have it by Friday, send Coach Lisa another email and we can get it tracked for you.

Hi Joey, I was just saying on your page that I am going to check and make sure your email isn't hiding somewhere. You should have received some email from me that explains more about the arrival of your Starter Kit.Have you been receiving my email?Sounds like we better check our lines!
As far as the Lunge workout goes.. you should feel it in your hamstrings . no doubt. I feel them in the glutes , and the quads too. It's really hard to check your form over the internet! Do you by any chance go to a gym? It would be ideal for you to have someone watch you and correct if need be. Check and make sure you aren't adding too much weight, go for form first.. I'll be in touch with you soon. I'll be out for a vacation day on Friday, the 14th... but will check my email some point in time , so please let me know.
Talk to you soon!
